Remembering our Babies Candle Lit Ceremony

The Maui March of Dimes 4th Annual "Wave of Light" candle-lighting ceremony in honor of those who have been touched by pregnancy or infant loss will be held Saturday October 15th at 7 p.m. on the lawn fronting the Kalana O Maui County Building on 200 S. High Street.

"The loss of an child during pregnancy or soon after birth is a unique loss, sadly sometimes ignored by family and friends." said Lauren Wilson, chairwoman of the event. "Friday's event is a night for parents, family and friends to celebrate and honor our children." The March of Dimes estimates that three babies pass away each week before their first birthday across Hawai`i.

The ceremony is part of a global event held that at 7 p.m. in every time zone with the goal of creating a "continuous wave of light," said Lauren Wilson, chairwoman of the event.

She was inspired to lead the candle-lighting ceremony after her daughter Akeelah Nadia, born premature, passed away in June 2008. Lauren Wilson and her husband, Lance, hope this event will raise awareness of pregnancy and infant loss, and provide comfort to families.

Participants are asked to be present by 6:45 p.m.

There is no greater grief than that of a parent that has said goodbye to a little one. No one should know such pain, yet sadly many parents do.

So many of our little ones were taken from us because of prematurity. In honor of Prematurity Awareness Day on November 18th, please wear purple for the leading cause of infant mortality in the United States.

March of Dimes Maui Board President Shannon Robinson today announced that the general public is invited to the March of Dimes - Maui Division's 2nd Annual "Wave of Light" candle lighting ceremony in recognition of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. on the lawn fronting the County of Maui Kalana O Maui building, 200 S. High Street, Wailuku. Participants are asked to be in attendance by 6:45 p.m.

Event chair Lauren Wilson said, "The Wave of Light is a way for all those who have been touched by pregnancy or infant loss to remember and honor their loved ones. This is a global event that we are very honored to bring to Maui. Ceremonies are held at 7 p.m. on October 15th around the world to create a continuous wave of light."

Wilson was inspired to chair this event after her daughter, Akeelah Nadia, passed away in June 2008. She and husband Lance hope that the event will raise awareness of pregnancy and infant loss and provide comfort to families touched by loss.

March of Dimes is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes carries out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. The March for Babies walk on Maui is Saturday April 18th at War Memorial Stadium. It is the fundraising walk for the March of Dimes. Walking can be a wonderful way to honor your angel.

Never Empty Handed

One of the hardest parts of our daughter passing was leaving the hospital empty handed. Our arms ached for our daughter. We clung to the blanket we were given.

We are determined to ensure no parent leaves the hospital empty handed. We hand knotted each blanket with love. We hope it brings you moments of peace.
