October 15th: Candle Lighting Ceremony

March of Dimes Maui Board President Shannon Robinson today announced that the general public is invited to the March of Dimes - Maui Division's 2nd Annual "Wave of Light" candle lighting ceremony in recognition of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. on the lawn fronting the County of Maui Kalana O Maui building, 200 S. High Street, Wailuku. Participants are asked to be in attendance by 6:45 p.m.

Event chair Lauren Wilson said, "The Wave of Light is a way for all those who have been touched by pregnancy or infant loss to remember and honor their loved ones. This is a global event that we are very honored to bring to Maui. Ceremonies are held at 7 p.m. on October 15th around the world to create a continuous wave of light."

Wilson was inspired to chair this event after her daughter, Akeelah Nadia, passed away in June 2008. She and husband Lance hope that the event will raise awareness of pregnancy and infant loss and provide comfort to families touched by loss.

March of Dimes is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes carries out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.
